Hello,

I am underway from Norway to Morocco on my newly restored R 80 G/S (1981).
Today I was riding trough Denmark and experienced that the oil lamp came on.
at high RPM there was only a small glow, but at idle speed the lamp was fully on.
And it keeps getting worse. Now it looks like the lamp is on all the time.
From what I can gather, the problem must be the o-ring on the oil filter and I need to change it.

I am now in Hamburg and have a ticket with the train tomorrow after noon.
Does any one know if I can get a filter and gaskets in Hamburg tonight or in the morning? Before 12 o'clock?
Need oil as wel...

Just take care that there is no Problem in connection with the oil suspension …
This COULD be a symptom of a wrong bearing.
Take it easy and keep the rpm in the mid-range..

If the O-Ring is the Problem, there is a good chance of a reduced oil pressure and that could do some harm in the near future !

Is the OilPressure Indication constantly lighted ? Or does it beam whenever the engine is real warm/Hot ?

Sounds like a severe problem

Question : Does the light dim (or is it off) whenever You speed the engine? That is a sign of a problem in the oil-circulation..
If it's ON all the time, there is a severe chance of damaging the main bearings of the shaft..

BTW … Are You shire that the light is the control-lightof the oil pressure? Or COULD it be that there is a glowing light of the generator …
These old bikes tend to have a problem with this ..

Kann gut sein Benno.. Aber evtl verwechselt er auch die Anzeige oder das HAuptKW Lager ist etwas zu groß dimensioniert einsetzt worden (macht man ja gern) dann KANN er Glück haben.
Wenn nur der Distanzring des Ölfilters zum Gehäuserand fehlt oder die Dose zum Gehäuse sich gesetzt hat, könnte es harmloser sein.

Würde auch nicht weiterfahren ! Ohne Klärung

If you are sure that your problem is the filter, you can take the train. The filter will be available all over Europe in a few days. But if there is a risk of a damaged engine, I wouldn't take the train.

@Dirk: Ich denke, wir denken das Gleiche. Hoffentlich hat er sich mit der Lampe vertan, wenn nicht, müsste der Motor eigentlich längst hin sein.

The light goes almost off when I speed up (100km/h & 5th gear).
the engine runs just fine, but I am worried about the oil circulation.
Oil filter was changed not so long ago. <1500 km.

Maybe I could rent a car and drive up? I guess it is possible to there and return to Altonna in 4 hrs?

Hello Norwegian!

I'm relatively sure that you only have filled in the wrong oil.
Consider the temperatures in D and specifically in Morocco - you need a 20W50 Oil or anything else.
It would be advantageous if you accept blackbeemer`s offer. Change oil (and if possible also the filter).

Since this started, the bike has done more than 500 km and it does not appear to be overheated in any way. At least not that I can see. I had several stops, where it cooled off, and it started again just fine.
Can a faulty bearing trigger the light? By the way, it is not the charging light I am looking at. I can see how they can be mixed up.
I use 10w40 oil that I got from boxerparts.

Thanks again for your help.
I followed your advice and managed to download the BMW repair handbook. No more "Haynes" for me.
the engine still runs fine, and sometimes, especially at high speed, the light goes off.
Reading the book, it says that low pressure could be because the over pressure valve is stuck in open position.
then I remembered that the old filter had collapsed. Such high pressure could have opened the safety valve?
do you know if we checked the over pressure valve?

no, we didn´t check the overpressure-valve. It´s located under the chaincase in the front of the motor.
