I've been using Mobil 1 15W50 since it had 15k and for the trans/final drive I've been using Redline 80w140. When I removed the heads to replace the chain guides I was amazed at how clean the motor was inside. It looked as if it was brand new. I've been changing the motor oil at 5k mile cycles and the final drive/ trans at 10k. I adjust the valves or at least check them around 10k miles. I find that they are hardly ever off....
I have to say that I can also be lazy about doing work on the GS. I don't like having down time that takes a lone time, but sometimes I have to do some work. The spline lube for the drive shaft is done around every 30 or 40k miles as thats about the time I have to replace pivot bearings at the arm/final drive. The splines at the clutch to trans have only been done when I have replaced the clutch back when I had 190k miles. I know I'm due to service the clutch splines soon. Maybe during the Christmas holidays....

What has been the secret to the long life? I think it's as some earlier said, you just have to ride the bike. I don't tend to babe the bike at all but these days I don't try to reach redline. I'll buzz 80-90 if I can but my normal speed is around 75 mph. I tend to change gears around 5 or 6k rpms.
I do ride everyday, most of the miles come from my going to work and back.
When I can I like to ride to Mexico to rediscover the country side. Back in feb I took a trip to Panama with some friends. I heard over and over " Your not taking your old GS?" I've also been over 3/4 of the USA. I'm lucky that my work lets me take time of to recharge my batteries- refresh my brain, most of the time its a bike trip somewhere. I'm never out to set a ironbutt record run but somehow the miles just keep adding up. Its ways about enjoying the trip.
Thanks for the kind words, here is a picture I took of my GS in Tulum back when I only had 200k
