Hi folks,
I'm taking my 12 year old son for a 10-12 day trip to Germany (from Denmark) this summer.

Any suggestions where to go?

We like to camp out in woods and light a fire for roasting sausages.

Perhaps the museum of natural history in Berlin.

Bits of the 'wall'.

Other suggestions?

Kind regards
Soren

hey soren,

open fire are mostly prohibited in whole Germany... so don't get catched or keep barbecuing on the campgrounds...

i dunno if a 12 year old kid is interested in germany history that much... but u can try it. Berlin is a nice city to visit.

If you are ocming from DK, Hambourg is on your way, so why don't u stop over here for a few days.

Hambourg Dungeon

Daytrip to the Heidepark Soltau could be fun...

on your way to Berlin you could have a look at the Niederfinow ship lift...
http://www.wsv.de/wna-b/bauwerke_an...werk_niederfinow/sonstiges/nifi_flyer_eng.pdf

just to name a few!

depends how much time you have, and how far south you want to go!

cheers from hamburg :)

Hamburg is a must...

...we're stopping by the louis shop in Hamburg, perhaps a good place to spend the first night. (Hamburg, that is ... not Louis)

Thanks for the links. The dungeon looks 'familiar' has it been open for 20+ years? I think I might have been there (or somewhere similar) as a kid.

Hi Søren,
yes, I do have a few suggestions, but please tell us which direction you would like to take from Hamburg.
I think the Harz Mountain is worth a visit (Pullman City for your son?), then, of course, the Vogelsberg / Rhön, Spessart - all these destinations are within easy reach during your trip.
Then, it may also be good to know what your son likes to do/see.

We like to camp out in woods and light a fire
Forget it, stay on campgrounds. If you have a navigation device, let us know and we can supply POIs.

Greetings

No particular direction

We need father/son time, i.e time to just hang out, maybe do some fishing, barbecuing over open fire (camp-sites I guess?), etc.

Last year we were in Norway and did some river rafting, which he enjoyed very much. See this:

Denmark is almost completely cultivated: all farmland and tarmac. Not a lot of woodlands. The highest point is ~146 meters above sea level - i.e no mountains. The widest stream is 30 meters across. So we wouldn't mind some spectacular nature.

One thing I enjoyed in Norway, was that it wasn't too crowded. I don't mind camp-sites as such, but prefer some peace and quiet. In Norway and Sweden it's allowed to peg your tent pretty much anywhere, as long as you don't stay more than one night or make a mess - not the same in Germany?

I do have a GPS (iPhone app) which I bring along.

Kind regards
Soren

Hi Søren,

Germany is by not way as rugged as Norway, so don't expect too much of it, yet it does have its beautiful spots :D.

Moreover, we don't have this freedom Scandinavian countries can be so proud of - there is definitely no wild camping - except maybe if you can make arrangements with a farmer to let you stay on his property.

Here's one out of a million possible routes for you:

Hamburg (mentioned already) -> Lüneburg (beautiful city with a long salt trade tradition) - Berlin (mentioned already) - Dresden (check out "The Bastei) - Fulda (Rhön/Vogelsberg) - Braunlage (Harz mountain) - Hameln (along the River Weser) - Bremen (Übersee-Museum) - Hamburg - home.

If/When you can specify your plans, I can supply more information (GPS coordinates, POIs). Does your device read gpx files?

As for camping: you may want to check out Archies.

Enjoy your planning

Good replies - thanks

Thanks for all your suggestions.

miniatur-wonderland may be a good idea as well - I'll have a look at the website together with my boy and see what takes his interest.

I don't know if my device reads gpx files - it's an iPhone with the TomTom application. It has a list of POI already in it, though.

archies camping looks very useful - thanks!

Die bastei certainly looks nice ... I think we'll go by that way.

Mittelrhein also looks interesting, but is kinda the opposite way of Berlin.

ok here we go.....

wild camping and open fire is forbidden in germany...everywhere!...the better choice will be an official campground but you have to pay for...some €

fishing without an official card (its like the driving licence) is forbidden! you cannot buy fishing cards somewhere! its not possible! germany has strange laws for fishing.....!

i know its very different to denmark...sweden or other countries where you can camp where you want and make fire where you want...also to buy a fishingpermission for some days:mad:

in germany is everything forbidden what makes fun and let you feel like an hunterman or wildcampman:D

i you think about some good places to visit in germany....my favourites are not berlin and hamburg...those very big cities are not fun to ride them!

mittelrhein like you said is awesome and reminds on some "fairy tale" books....

edersee lake is also a good destination...campgrounds everywhere around the lakes....bodenseearea is very beautifull.....the bamberg/ nürnberg is very woth to go there....old houses ...nice landscapes and the best brewerys along the route :)

tell us what you want to do and i can make you a little plan or a routemap if you like!

cheers....chris

hmmm

We might actually end up heading for Norway in stead then :( We might do a day-trip to Hamburg.

Sleeping 'wild' and roasting sausages over an open fire is a must :o

Thanks for your suggestions though.

Soren, if wild camping is a must then Germany is not the right target for you and your son.

Otherwise, do not believe anything and in particular not the mood these German complainers are spraying around. They have no clue in what beautiful green and clean country they are living. There are gorgeous landscapes, nice and humanly towns & cities, loads of culture, and plenty to do outside almost everywhere.

And: From all those densely populated countries it is one of the best countries in the world to travel by bike. You might not find loads of opportunity to experience raw nature but plentiful other real nice things.

wise words. Harz, Thüringer Wald and Elbsandsteingebirge (near Dresden, also worth a visit) are already mentioned, Weserbergland, Sauerland and may be Eifel with the Nürburgring are in Your range. No, there is no wild camping, thank god, because if only 1 % of 80.000.000 people go camping it would be a horror. But there are beautiful camping grounds and fantastic motorcycle routes in in all these regions

and, of course in Berlin Madame Tussauds

In some areas, there are official bbq sites out in the woods, run by the local village administrations.

And it might be possible to stay there overnight (ask the locals).
