Does anyone know if there are any workshops in Deutschland -
NRW/Belgien /Holland/Luxemburg on how to repair your moto yourself (basic and advanced techniques) in English? I know there are some great workshops in German but I won't be able to follow them.

not a direct answer to your question, but perhaps a solution instead: I really enjoyed Chris Harris' video tutorials at youTube, i.e.

If on your side there is some pre-knowledge and some - not only basic - repairing skills are available, a lot of helpful instructions, tips and tricks can be found on the net.

Thanks for the suggestion! I have subscribed a long time ago for his videos. I find them more of a video-blog than a "how to" but he has a nice approach and usually replies to questions (apparently he lost a lot of weight from his first videos ;)).

I was looking more for a workshop that takes you from step A to step Z and gives you more reference. My knowledge is basic but I am not sure I trust myself to tamper with the engine etc.

I have to confess: I never heard about (more or less professional organised) BMW repair workshops in Germany. May be others did, question to the forum...

Lack of BMW-workshops may be due to the different BMW-clientele (elder, higher income, affinity to dealer's workshop ...). For other brands and models there are few, i.e. Stefan Hessler's "Suzuki DR 800 - SchrauBär-Tag" DR BIG SchrauBärTag 25. Februar 2017. Of course basic techniques are similar, but transfer to BMW specialities (telelever, gearbox, clutch, ...) would be your task.

On the other hand, BMWs official maintainance handbook offers detailled description on 95% of the possible tasks. But concerning diagnosis of the problem you are on your own.

So, best way to deal with this would be to post a precise description of the problem you have in the model specific forum, collect the replies, compare with replies to similar postings and select the helpful information. Check and try, in case of doubt try to contact the relevant authors.

Thank you Roland! I have a lot of fun with it. For instance, I have some oil on the base of the engine (left side - side of the oil cap). I am pretty sure it's the rubber part placed on the base of the boxer. However, I do not think so. Last time I went to a car in Aachen, the official BMW dealer, it was a great deal.





I would like to be able to do it. I dont think I can afford to pay more than 1000euros for each service. Would be great if someone knows something! Thanks again for the info and the reply!

Thank you RolandBN! I actually see that my moto gets gradually more expensive to maintain the older it gets (which is normal I guess).

For instance I have some oil leaking on the base of the motor (left side - side of the oil cap). I am pretty sure it is the rubber part placed on the base of the boxer. However I do not think I trust myself that much to take the whole engine apart to change this.

Last time I went to get a service in Aachen, the official BMW dealer there told me that for the next service it will cost me more than 1500 euros (around 500 euros is manwork and that is only for the left part).

I try to fix whatever I can, but I wanted to get some hands on experience to do such work. I dont think I can afford to pay more than 1000euros for each service and (for the time being) I can afford a new BMW. Would be great if someone knows something!

But depreciation is much less - so in the end for 10-15 years you have a surplus ...

Uff, I did: replacement of the entire clutch, replacement of the oil seal (engine-side), professional overhauling of the gearbox, replacement of swingarm bearings and some minor parts for about 1000 Euros. O.k.: it took some time, I had to have a garage and some tools ...

But now it should be fine for the next 80-100.000 kms. So: dont be afraid, organise yourself a maintainance handbook, place your questions in the appropriate forum (R 850 GS und R 1100 GS ? / R 1150 GS und R 1150 GS Adventure ? ...) and start doing. Normal service for the beemers is not big deal.

Concerning your oil leak: Did you check the seal of the oil filter? If this is not the reason: Clean the entire area, have a short ride, check for oil and identify the source. Post your problem and dont forget so add a picture or two.
