Latvia has officially announced that it will not accept relocated migrants under the European Union’s Migration and Asylum Pact.
Latvia's Foreign Minister Baiba Braže confirmed that the country will neither participate in the EU's mandatory migrant relocation quotas nor pay the financial penalties for it, which is €20,000 per migrant.
The EU fines member states for refusing to participate in its migrant quotas, with a charge of 20,000 euros for each migrant, regardless of whether they crossed the borders legally or illegally.
The Latvian government maintains that its primary contribution to European security is the ongoing defense against weaponized illegal migration at its eastern border with Belarus, aligning Latvia's stance with other regional opponents of the pact, like Poland.
Latvia views migration policy as a matter of national sovereignty and security rather than a collective EU obligation.
